Resolute Announces Shut-down of Laurentide

Resolute Forest Products announced it will permanently close it’s Laurentide mill in Shawinigan, QC.   Laurentide produces approximately 210,000 tons/yr of SNC and SCB grades.  This would leave a big hole in capacity unless SCA producers fill the gap – but tonnage will be pre-made for the Fall season before Laurentide shuts.  Resolute cites high costs as the reason for the closure.

As we head into Catalog season and then the Holidays, we will see if SC firms up. It is uncertain whether the weaker than anticipated economy will affect Insert and Magazine circulation even further. We have seen soft pricing causing migration both ways between SC and Coated Groundwood.

SC pricing ended up eroding (not quite as much as Coated Groundwood) due to the weakened Magazine circulation/advertising and circulation cutbacks in Catalog due to Postal increases. No price increase announcements were made with the Coated stock announcements.
